Answering Dumb Questions About Podcasting

August 30, 2019

Before I have you come for me about the title, I know I am being really passive-aggressive but these are the most common questions I have received when talking to people about podcasting. So for both your entertainment and education, I will be going over some of the most frequently asked podcasting questions that I receive.

“Can you even make money podcasting?”

Being a Podcast Consultant and a podcaster myself, I always get frustrated when people ask this question because podcasting is one of the best ways to become self-employed. According to Time.com, in 2018 alone the podcasting industry generated an estimated $479 million in advertising revenue. It’s predicted to expand into over a billion dollars by 2021. So umm yes, you can make money with podcasting. This doesn’t mean that everyone will because it takes time and commitment but with a loyal fan base, it is highly possible.

“Is podcasting a real job?”

Well, I would definitely be out of a job if it wasn’t. Not only is podcasting a job, but it’s a complete industry. You have show writers, Audio Editors, Producers, media marketing teams, podcast consultants, podcast conferences, and so much more. If you can't generate income, then maybe it’s not a real job, but as I said in the last question, it's predicted to be a billion-dollar industry.

“Don’t people think it’s weird? You’re like essentially talking to yourself.”

Like radio, podcasts can have various formatting styles. You can have a podcast where you hold conversations with friends and talk about topics. You can have a podcast that is documentary-style features. You can even have podcasts that are hour-long Dj mixes. Your podcast can be whatever you want it to be and if that’s just you talking yourself into the microphone, then so be it.

“Don’t you need thousands of dollars to start?”

You don’t need thousands of dollars to start a podcast. You can literally start right now with your phone and computer if you really wanted to. If you have an idea and a message to tell, share it by word of mouth through podcasting.

I hope these answers inspired you to rethink how you look at the world of podcasting.
