How Can You Become A Boss On LinkedIn?

October 31, 2019

By Jasmine Jones

It’s no secret that having an online presence is key to growing your brand, but if you want to be taken seriously in your career or industry, you need to be on LinkedIn. LinkedIn hosts over 500 million professional profiles. What does that mean for you? An unlimited supply of network connections and career opportunities. LinkedIn is the online version of a huge networking event that is available 24/7. That being said, here are some tips to boost your personal brand on LinkedIn.

‘Let’s start with the visuals.’

Having the right picture is everything. You can’t just throw up a profile picture that you would put on your personal Facebook. You need to show yourself off in a professional manner. If you don’t believe me, then listen to what LinkedIn has to say about it.

"Our research shows that just having a picture makes your profile 14 times more likely to be viewed by others..."

First impression is everything, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t get a little creative with your picture. Depending on what industry you are in and the career field you identify with, you can go about two ways of posting your profile picture. You can do a traditional headshot or you can do an action shot. An action shot shows people in one glance that you are active in the field that you work in.

Now if you aren’t about doing an action shot in your main profile picture, I would highly suggest putting it in your cover photo. Your cover photo is a great place to show people visually what you are all about when they come to your profile.

Many people don’t realize, but when you put words like “student” or “professional looking for” in your heading, you are turning off potential networking connections. I am not saying to lie about what you do, but if you are a student studying to be an Audio engineer, you should put that you are an Audio engineer. Then when people look into your about section and your experience, they will know that you are a student studying for that career. Same concept for someone who is looking for a job.

‘My last tip is to link it up!’

Show of your work and achievements. If you are going to do it in an interview to get a job, why not do it on your LinkedIn page? When filling out your various career experiences and even school information, make sure to add pictures from events that you were a part of while you were there. If you were ever featured in your school’s newsletter or newspaper, add a website link from it to your page. I would also recommend you adding links to your resume website.
